Campbeltown

Campbeltown is Kintyre's main town with the greatest population and is famous for the whisky - hence the old song Campbeltown Loch - which used to be the main industry there back in the 1800s with several dozen distilleries all producing large amounts of whisky to be transported nation and worldwide by steam boats.

A rail link used to exist between Machrihanish and Campbeltown so that the 'well to do' visitors could travel between the two, mostly so that golf could be played.

Today, Campbeltown has one single distillery - Springbank - which is recognised as being the only distillery to complete every process of from production to bottling at the plant.

The town has a slightly negative reputation, which in all fairness is not deserved, and once what was a busy and wealthy town ( when the U.S airforce personnel occupied Machrihanish AFB), has remitted and retail has suffered since their withdrawel at the end of the 90s.

The town though is on the up, with investment both into the hotel trade, retail, local authority buildings and premises, and into the renewable energy industry Campbeltown is to see much better days in the future.
