A hidden gem on the south westerley portion of Kintyre, Machrihanish is a linear village famed for its natural links golf course, often regarded as one of, if not the best links golf course in Scotland.
Machrihanish, also known for the link with the M.O.D air force base, has a superb selection of accommodation which overlook the golf course and the landscape, allowing you to watch the sunset fall of a summer evening. Coincidentally what use to be the highly classified RAF Machrihanish is now Campbeltown Airport and used as a civil airfield and only used from time to time for small military exercises. The U.S forces that were here in the 90s have long since disappeared. An interesting fact is that the the runway at Machrihanish is the longest in Europe, at 10km long.
Campbeltown, is the closest large town to Machrihanish and the main shopping center in Kintyre, passing through Campbeltown and driving for about fifteen minutes will take you to Machrihanish.
The final leg of much loved Kintyre Way walk which traverses the peninsula of Kintyre starts at Machrihanish and finishes at Southend, a challenging section of the walk across some rocky terrain, but for those that enjoy a challenging walk without a golf club, this could be an alternative.
The Machrihanish Golf Club, the original historic golf club, is as far removed from busy, municipal golf as you can possibly get. Golf is played in a peaceful, coastal location, with one of the finest opening holes of golf in the world overlooking the vast expanse of Machrihanish Bay, the sandy shore below you as you tee off into some of the most varied conditions ever played on single course, ever changeable and often plied with a gentle breeze and summer sunshine.
The Golf club has two golf courses, the Championship Course containing the full challenging 18 holes of links delight, plus a further 9 hole Pans course for juniors, high handicap amateurs and most often used by ladies.

Set close to the open sea is the Machrihanish Seabird and Wildlife Observatory, a small building built for the purposes of watching and photographing seabirds and wildlife in their natural environment, so they may remain undisturbed and you can get the benefits of being close and photographing rare or unusual bird species.
The bird observatory is open from Easter until October.
